Bakhtegan is the second largest wetland in Iran, located in the east of Fars Province, and is home to thousands of plants and animals, especially many birds. During a census, during the high water period of Bakhtegan, the presence of more than one million birds, i.e. 185 species of migratory and native birds, was recorded.
Changes in the Bakhtegan Wetland watershed have led to widespread changes in the condition of the wetland. Dam construction, uncontrolled development of agricultural lands, and excessive water withdrawal for agriculture in the lands upstream of the wetland have created the current crisis for Iran's second largest lake.
