The Eighth Assembly: Amr bin Abdoud-هاشور

The Eighth Assembly: Amr bin Abdoud

language: Farsi | Iran |

A story of courage, sincerity, and the victory of truth; a battle that ended with faith and restraint.

This assembly is the story of the battle between the Muslim army and the Jewish army in the Battle of the Trench and the confrontation between Imam Ali (AS) and Amr ibn Abdud.

The Jewish elders, who were fed up with the spread of Islam in the land of Hijaz, sent a letter to Amr ibn Abdud, the most famous warrior of their people, asking him to take command of the army and go to Medina to fight the Muslims and eliminate the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Amr ibn Abdud accepted this request, put on armor, and marched towards Medina with his troops.

When the Muslims learned of this campaign, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) ordered them to be ready. At the suggestion of Salman al-Farsi and with divine help, the Muslims dug a trench around the city of Medina to prevent the enemy from advancing, although they feared the large number of the Jewish army.

The Jewish army stopped at the trench upon reaching Medina; but Amr ibn Abdud crossed the trench on his horse and proudly demanded a fighter. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) first called upon Umar ibn al-Khattab to fight, but he refused to face Amr. Then Jabir went to the field, but was defeated in the battle.

In the meantime, Imam Ali (PBUH) announced his readiness to fight Amr ibn Abdud several times, but Imam Muhammad (PBUH) did not allow him to go to the field at first due to his youth. Finally, on the third request, the Prophet (PBUH) agreed, personally put armor on Imam Ali (PBUH) and sent him to the battlefield.

Amr ibn Abdud mocked Imam Ali (PBUH) and tried to dissuade him from fighting, but eventually the battle began and Amr was defeated by Imam Ali (PBUH). The Imam announced that the condition for his survival was to accept Islam, but Amr spat in his face at the last moment.

Imam Ali (AS) took a moment to distance himself from the battle so that his personal anger would not interfere with his decision and action. After his anger subsided and only for the sake of God, defending Islam and the command of the Holy Prophet (PBUH), he returned to the field and killed Amr ibn Abd al-Wud.
